Jan 28, 2012 Hello Dubai Offroaders members. I have noticed confusion about the operation and the frequencies used in our offroad walkie talkie. As we all know, walkie talkie is essential for communication and safety of the drivers and the passengers on all our drives.

I got into ham radio as a result of off-roading. Wanted something for communication that was better than a basic CB radio. Over time, I've noticed that many of the groups I travel with use 146.46 for simplex communication. At first, I thought it was just a matter of habit, and having lots of overlap between the members of the various groups & clubs around here. But I've also seen the freq referred to as the 'off-road frequency'?
I've done some digging and looking around, but haven't really found much info that explains why this particular frequency was selected. (Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places.)
Can anyone enlighten me?
--EDIT--
Thanks for the info folks. I had a hunch that it had something to do with a combo of being easy to remember, and having something to do with the band plans. Just wasn't totally sure though, and figured that there's always someone out there that knows more than you do, so I'd ask.
